The Asahi Shimbun notes China has been chosen by Toyota to build the first foreign built Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. Apparently the Chinese government has been requesting the manufacturing because of their concern with exhaust pollution and energy preservation. It is not because of their large market for hybrid technology. More than half of Prius sold have been bought in the US.
"The Chinese government announced in June last year a policy to actively introduce environmentally friendly vehicles. The government, local automakers and research institutes are cooperating on domestic production of hybrid vehicles."
Considering the growth China has been facing in the demand for technology, and the pollution concerns that run parallel with those demands, it is not surprising to find they are concerned with those issues.
Toyota, on the other hand, should be able to produce components for less, reducing the price for the Prius in North America and Europe.
