Ford Oakville to build hybrid versions of new vehicles

According to autonews24h, Ford will be investing $1 billion dollars in refitting the Oakville, Ontario plant. Plans include making the plant capable of building hybrid cars, making it the first auto plant in Canada capable of building hybrids.

The new plant will be able to build the hybrid versions of the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossover utility vehicle. Production of hybrids is not expected until 2010, however.

In order to build hybrids, the plant is being outfitted for flexible manufacturing. This will allow the assembly line to be reconfigured quickly as needed based on consumer demand.
