City may offer free parking for hybrid vehicles

FERNDALE — It's no secret hybrid and electric cars save money for their drivers on the road, but they may soon save money even when they are parked — at least in Ferndale.
Councilman Craig Covey is touting a measure to allow free parking at city parking meters for hybrid cars. The savings would equal 50 cents an hour.
"I'd like to do it for a one-year trial period," Covey said. "If you drive a hybrid or electric car you don't have to feed the meters."
Such a move will encourage people to pursue "greener cars and less dependence on foreign oil," he said.
