The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute are being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) The Ford Escape hybrid is not involved in the investigation, because the models affected are from 2001 to 2003. The Escape came out in 2004.
It seems the antilock braking system's electronic control module may be overheating, starting fires in eight vehicles (five of which were parked). In two other cases, reports of smoke or melted electrical connectors and wiring near the system in Escapes.
The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute have similar structures.
