Chevy Silverado Hybrid Unveiled Today

Silverado Two Mode HybridGM unveiled today at the LA Auto Show the new and improved Chevy Silverado Hybrid. The new hybrid, which will be available next year, has been updated with the two mode hybrid system co-invented with BMW and DaimlerChrysler. Previously, the Silverado Hybrid (now retired) was a mild hybrid system with little added benefit. Now, however, the new system will give its owners a 40% increase in city fuel economy, for a 25% overall improvement.

GM's Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and nickel metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS) is coupled with a 6-liter, V-8 gas engine capable of producing 332 hp. The gas engine has cylinder deactivation, which will provide for greater fuel efficiency when driving at constant speeds. Since this is a full hybrid system, the Silverado can be moved by the electric motor alone up to 30 mph.

The Silverado Hybrid will only be available in the crew cab body style, but will come in two- and four-wheel-drive. It is said to be able to tow up to 6,100 lbs.

GM is bringing the two mode system first to market in the Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade. It will follow up with the Silverado in about a year or so.

Chrylser is also showing off its two new full size SUV hybrids, the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Chrysler expects both models to be on sale in mid 2008. And yeah, they've got a (hybrid) hemi under there.
