Mitsubishi is looking to bring an small electric 'commuter' car to market by 2010 and a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) would most likely follow. It's unclear when the PHEV would be produced, however.
Although Osamu Masuko, president of Mitsubishi, believes their battery development has advanced far enough to make an small electric car, he believes the PHEV may be the best solution for anything larger.
Mitsubishi has developed their own lithium-ion battery pack in house.
It would be hard to believe that Mitsubishi will follow through on these vehicles, however. Back in December of 2005, Mitsubishi introduced a hybrid concept car, but have never followed through on the possibilities. And even if they do, would it come to the US? Mitsubishi introduced their own diesel hybrid truck, the Canter Eco Hybrid, in Japan back in July of 2006, but they don't seem to have any plans to bring it overseas.
