The Connecticutt town of Orange will become the first to waive the tax on those who own cars getting 40 mpg or better in city driving.
"It's a good first step," Orange First Selectman James Zeoli said.Like other CT towns, Orange selectman were worried that by abating the tax on those citizens means the other citizens are being forced to make up for the difference. Vernon, CT, for instance, has tried twice to pass a similar measure, but both efforts have failed to be passed by the selectman.
"We want to promote and encourage energy conservation," Orange Selectman Mitchell Goldblatt said. "This will help keep our air cleaner."
Selectman worry that these types of measures are passing the tax burden from the rich onto the poor because of the expense of hybrid cars. But, others feel that the benefits outweigh the cost.
