Oil Over $100 a Barrel Means High Gas Prices in the US

Gas prices in Alaska have already hit $4.95 a gallon. And with oil topping $100 a barrel, some experts are predicting gas prices could reach $4 a gallon in some regions by spring.

"With the price of oil over $100 a barrel, we should expect self-serve gasoline to reach $3.50 per gallon by spring," Geoff Sundstrom, spokesman for travel and auto group AAA, of Heathrow, Fla., told Automotive News. " Some regions could reach $4, especially for the West Coast."
Not good news for the automotive industry, which is already being hurt by the mortgage crisis. But, it should be good news for hybrid car and other fuel efficient car sales.

The relationship between gas prices and hybrid car sales is as obvious as it is clear.

Here in CA gas prices have been around $3.50 / gallon. Its really making me consider the benefits of buying an electric car. It's starting to look like the smartest bet.

Hi Paz,
You seem to have been skipping around the site leaving comments on quite a few posts, but I'm going to respond here.

You've been leaving comments about ev's and not hev (hybrid electric vehicles). I'm assuming you really did mean all electric vehicles. If so, I don't think we're that far along into the all electric car age as you seem to be thinking.

Why don't I think electric cars are really here today? Simple enough. The infrastructure would need to change significantly to do it. We do not have plugs on every other street corner. Plus it takes hours to recharge.

So you would need to plug in overnight, or you would need to have a plug at work and you would need them to be available while on vacation.

I don't see my workplace putting out plugs for everyone, and I don't see hotels and such putting out plugs for everyone either. That means you need to be able to travel via gasoline (or diesel), not just electric.

Which means that electric cars will continue to be a 'secondary' car. While some families with two cars might consider buying an electric car as their second car, most single and not rich people can't.

There are other reasons, of course, but those are the ones that jump to the top right from the beginning.

Of course, if you've been referring to hev all along, then I think we're on the same track.
