Like GM, Chrysler is in a bind when it comes to hybrid technology. They teamed up with BMW and GM to develop the two-mode hybrid system. The system requires a bit of room as well as being expensive, which was fine with them since they were planning on installing them into the more profitable SUV and truck line-up. The could even cut the price on their new SUV hybrids in an effort to undercut GM.
Unfortunately for them, they are going to market at just the wrong time. SUV and truck sales are falling fast with gas prices hitting $4 a gallon. They, like other car makers, are feeling the bite and are starting to switch away from larger vehicles into smaller ones.
But still, they are bringing the SUV hybrids to market. In August, they will bring out the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen Hybrid SUVs. Next year, they plan on bringing the Dodge Ram Hybrid Pickup to market. There are all rear-wheel systems.
The two-mode hybrid powertrain Chrysler, GM and BMW need more room and so it's likely that any sedans that come out with the same powertrain will also be rear-wheel drive. Which means sedans like the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger would be likely candidates.
