Honda Insight Sales Twice Expected So Far in Japan

It seems that if you cut the price on a hybrid, you're going to make sales.  Honda has a monthly sales goal of 5,000 Honda Insights a month, and so far they've sold 10,000. (Nikkei report via GCC).  And that's just for the first 10 days!

Now, that includes pre-orders, but  that's still a great start to what is hopefully going to be the beginning of a real competition for the Prius.  As long as sales for other hybrids go up, Toyota will feel the pressure to keep improving the Prius and keep the price down, if not cut it.

That pace will come down, and we'll have to wait and see how well Honda does in the US with the new Insight.  But I'm betting the pace will be high here.  There seems to be some pent up demand for high fuel economy at lower prices.  As gas prices continue to creep back up, people are looking for more from their cars.
