The plan to purchase 100 diesel electric hybrids in Maryland has been approved to the tune of $62 million. The new buses should be hitting the streets this year.
Last July, Governor O'Malley announced his intention to commit the Maryland Transit Administration to only purchase hybrid electric buses in the future.
The plan is to get 500 hybrid diesel electric buses on the road by 2014.
According to testing, hybrid buses used 20 percent less fuel and have been 50 percent quieter.
