Nevada Passes HOV Access for Hybrids

AB163 has been signed into law, allowing the Department of Transportation in Nevada to allow low emission and energy efficient vehicle access to the HOV lanes even with just one person in the car. As of now, that's about 5 miles of road, but it will shortly be expanded to 15 miles.

The intention is to provide an HOV access for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The lawmakers gave the Dept. of Transportation an out by changing the language to say they 'may' instead of 'shall' allow hybrids into the HOV lane. That will give them the option of disallowing the program if the HOV lanes become too crowded.
