San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is pushing for plug-in hybrid cars in a big way. Standing in front of a garage that converts hybrids into plug-in hybrids, Newsom said "This is an open purchase order where we will commit to purchasing these low-emission cars and we will use them to replace the vehicles in our existing fleet. We want to create our own market for these cars."
Newsom is planning on encouraging other mayors in the Bay Area to join him in the effort. He is also going to encourage others at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in June.
Pat's Garage converted three hybrids for the city into plug-ins. The Garage says it costs about $20,000 to convert a Prius into a Plug-in.
Although the article doesn't mention them (Source: Newsom urges push for hybrid plug-in cars), it sounds like Newsom has signed on as part of Plug-in Partners (previous post). Plug-in Partners is hoping to encourage plug-in vehicles by creating a market for them before they are in mass production.
