In an effort to encourage hybrid car ownership in China, the finance ministry is offering a subsidy to companies and institutions that buy hybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicles.
Noting the high price tag on hybrid vehicles, the ministry said "such cars have been out of reach of the common people." But the ministry is not offering to subsidize vehicle purchases for individuals.
The subsidy is available in 11 cities, including Beijing and Shanghai for public transportation, taxi service, postal and sanitary use.
The Chinese government wants to curb pollution, help promote hybrid car production and cut down on gasoline use.
Local governments are expected to make the purchases, house and maintain the vehicles.
